Instant Prehistoric Animals

Minor Cuts, Scrapes & Burns

Cassette, 1987, Digital LP [RoosterCow] RC032 2026

IPA Minor Cuts, Scrapes, and Burns album cover

Minor Cuts, Scrapes & Burns is the first official release by Instant Prehistoric Animals (IPA). The original album was a home-dubbed cassette recorded in 1987. It is a mostly instrumental album featuring several songs my friend Toby and I recorded as a pre-IPA duo, as well as songs recorded with our friend Dave on drums.

I consider this to be one of the first RoosterCow releases. While RoosterCow Records did exit at the time this record was “released,” it was just a made up name I would put on the mix tapes I made for myself and friends.

For what it’s worth, this is what we were up to after not long after getting guitars.

Chris – guitar, vocals
Toby – guitar
Dave – drums, vocals on “Worn Out Shoe”

Worn Out

Cassette, 1988, Digital EP [RoosterCow] RC035 2026

Worn Out album cover

The Worn Out EP is the second release by IPA. Also, a home-dubbed cassette. We designed the covers and dubbed copies on cassettes to give to our friends. My lyrics at this point were somber. Ridiculous teenage poetry that makes me wretch. I still keep some of it stored away in old beer crates, but much of it had to be purged for the benefit of future generations. “Wishing I was Dead” “Worn Out” were a few of the more cheery titles.

Chris – guitar, vocals
Toby – guitar
Jeff – bass
Dave – drums

The Instant Prehistoric Animals Use Real Bullets

Cassette, 1988, Digital EP [RoosterCow] RC038 2026

Use Real Bullets album cover

The Instant Prehistoric Animals Use Real Bullets was a planned cassette release of songs. I had an idea for the cover but the track list and cassette j-card were never finished. The song “New World Babylon,” would have been the single with maybe “Changes” as the b-side. The other two tracks, “I Don’t Know” was an improvised song, with me on bass (I think). “Testing Patients” is an experimental “jam” that is a challenge (or maybe a chore) to listen to.

Chris – guitar, vocals
Toby – guitar
Jeff – bass
Dave – drums

Going to the Dogs

Digital LP [RoosterCow] RC040 2026

Going to the Dogs album cover

Going to the Dogs was not an official release. It was an idea that went far enough to have cover art. What would have been on this compilation of IPA odds and sods is clear from the previous one-of “best of” cassettes I dubbed as the band wound down in the summer of 1988. With titles like “Everything We’ve Ever Done,” “Confusion – IPA Shit,” “Jamming at Rob’s,” and “Songs to be Reckoned With,” these were not cohesive, well thought out or official releases. Until now!

Chris – guitar, vocals
Toby – guitar
Jeff – bass
